To be honest, I rarely carry a purse.
I live in rural Vermont, so my daily life is casual and I don’t have much to carry with me.
That said, there are just some times when a purse is a necessary accessory.
Sometimes it’s for convenience, because I’ve got a bunch of crap to hold.
Other times it’s for style, because that dress just needs a little something stylish to pull it together.
And when you’re a woman with a concealed carry weapon that you want to bring along, a purse just makes a lot of sense.
Why Every Woman Needs a Concealed Carry Purse
Yes, I know I said I’m not a big purse girl, but every woman with a concealed carry should have a dedicated purse for this purpose, and here’s why:
- It’s a natural advantage — Men just can’t get away with carrying a tote bag, backpack or handbag the way we can. Everyone expects a woman to be toting a purse along and will think nothing of it. Your secret weapon can double as a fashionable accessory.
- You probably already carry a purse — If it’s something you already do every day, it’s a convenient way to bring the concealed carry along.
- No bulges. Yeah, skip the bulge in your pants for a day and place your CCW in your purse. It’s a comfortable arrangement.
- It’s a low-stress choice for concealed carry newbies — If you haven’t been carrying your CCW too long, this is a great way to ease the stress. You just need to keep an eagle eye on the bag and make sure it stays safe, but you don’t have to worry about wearing a concealed carry holster, having a weapon pressed against your body somewhere and perhaps getting caught on your clothing.
- Easy and stealthy draw — It’s quite easy to draw your CCW from a purse, especially if you choose the right type of purse. Just see how this champion shooter gets it done.
Now, it’s also worth noting that it’s preferable to have a dedicated concealed carry purse. This purse should be specifically designed to conceal and draw a weapon. This will make your life a heck of a lot easier, and you’ll be grateful you’ve made this choice when the time comes to pull out your weapon.
The above being said, you can indeed turn any purse from your wardrobe into a concealed carry purse—and it might just become the best concealed carry purse you ever had. I’ll show you how.
How to Turn Any Purse into a Concealed Carry Purse
Yes, sometimes the best concealed carry purse is the one you already own and love.
Just add water!
Just kidding. Add a nifty Packin’ Neat removable purse holster instead. This holster can transform any purse you own into a concealed carry purse, so long as it’s big enough (more than 9″ high and 12″ wide, at the very least).
With one holster and five additional pockets to stash your smartphone, tactical knife and anything else you may need to secure. It accommodates a variety of compact pistols, subcompact pistols and revolvers. This universality is awesome since otherwise you’ll probably need to find a tailored holster for your specific weapon.
And while other bag inserts for carry weapons have your loaded gun pointing out at people when stored in the bag, this one smartly points your gun down at all times. This is a serious safety advantage over other carry purses that have you slip your weapon in horizontally.
This insert also keeps your gun more readily accessible than planner cases and other zipped-up containers that you can keep in a purse. Simple to draw is always a good thing!
The 8 Best Women’s Concealed Carry Purses for Style and Safety
Overland make a mean leather purse already—add a concealed carry holster and I’m sold. This looks like exactly the type of clean, casual, crossbody purse I’d carry anyway, so I’m sold.
This one is smaller than you might expect for a concealed carry purse, right? They really make good use of space and manage to fit one 6″ by 11″ holster pouch, lined with ballistic nylon and protected with a key lock, which can accomodate most compact and subcompact weapons.
Genuine leather. Hand-cut designs. Studs. Big, roomy compartments for all your things. And a sizeable concealed carry pouch you can access by unzipping the secret side compartment.
While this lacks the lock-and-key security of the previous bag, it comes with a matching wallet and keyring. If you love the design and enjoy having a roomy bag, this is a cute concealed carry purse for casual day use.
It’s a clone of a slouchy, black hobo bag I bought at Urban Outfitters and carried with me everywhere for a full two years before my mom “borrowed” it.
But I “borrow” plenty of her stuff, so I’ll let this one go.
It’s another genuine leather purse and it has the ballistic nylon lining and lock-and-key safety feature that the Overland crossbody bag boasts. I’d recommend you look for these featured at bare minimum.
It looks so simple from the outside, but inside it’s everything you need for your CCW. It has the horizontal secret pocket in the side, like so many other concealed carry purses, and it’s got a lock for security.
This one also comes with a separate holster to make sure your firearm is concealed safely—honestly it’s something these purses should all have. Step up your game, purse makers!
Looking for something smaller and cuter than what’s shown above? Got you covered.
This adorable little bag can go over the shoulder or be a crossbody bag. It’s lightweight, has a locking CCW compartment, and looks unreasonably small for a concealed carry purse.
But that’s what it is.
It’s made for compact pistols. You won’t have much additional storage space in there once you’ve got the firearm packed, but it does it’s job. You’ll just have to find somewhere else to put your phone and keys.
I know I’ve gushed about the style of a few purses above, but this is hands-down the winner. The best concealed carry purse on this li’l list.
Yes, it’s wicked stylish. I’m a huge fan of the cherry-red color and hand-etched leather designs—reminds me of an expensive pair of leather boots I like to steal from my mom’s closet.
It’s also one of the safest CCW purses I’ve come across.
So you’ve probably noticed that many of the above purses have one thing in common: They have your loaded gun pointing out horizontally rather than down.
This is one unsavory thing about the typical concealed carry purse.
When you’re learning how to use a gun safely, you’re always taught to avoid pointing it at anything you don’t want to kill. Well, once your firearm is in your concealed carry purse, it’s loaded and pointing directly at anyone you’re standing behind at the supermarket or talking to outside.
Of course, you can work on this yourself—add an additional small holster to your gun and try to make sure it’s tilted downwards within it’s concealed carry pouch.
Or, you could just buy this nice, neat little number from Gun Tote’n Mamas. They’ve got it all figured out. Look.
Your concealed carry weapon will be carefully tucked into a separate holster with velcro, then stuck to the interior of the pouch. It doesn’t have a lock and key, but it does have a wire-reinforced, slash-resistant strap, which is an awesome feature.
This lovely concealed carry purse is one of my favorites because it has a lot of the positive features we’ve gone through above: It keeps the firearm very secure with a velcro holster, points the gun downward, can be adjusted for right-hand-draw or left-hand draw, has a lock and key for the CCW compartment, and is so slim and trim that it’s convenient and subtle to carry along.
Plus, it’s a crossbody purse with plenty of pockets with enough storage space for the essentials: smartphones, cards and cash. And it comes in a nice variety of colors, black and gray for neutral-purse-lovers, and blue for color addicts like me:
Who doesn’t love a cute backpack that doubles as a purse? This compact leather backpack has as much style as any purse, but come with tons of additional storage space in neatly-organized compartments.
If you love to stay organized, and plan to bring along CCW accessories and other items, this is a great option for you. It’s also so comfortable to have everything packed away on your back and fastened carefully to your shoulders.
